A Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

Updated: Jan 7, 2022

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student studying video games in Vermont. What draws him to games is the narrative - all the ways they can convey a story to the player - and, for the same reason, he is also drawn to books. He spends much of his extra time browsing the university library, looking for his next read, or tucked in the corner of a café with his nose in a book. Books become more than a hobby, though, when Zachary discovers an ancient book that is about himself. How could a book include a chapter about Zachary if it was written over a hundred years before he was born? The mystery of the book takes over all of his thoughts, and he begins to investigate. Meanwhile, far beneath the ground he stands on, a forgotten world is waiting for him.

OVERALL RATING 10/10

The Starless Sea is a captivating and exciting tale, woven in a masterfully mysterious way. As always, Erin Morgenstern leaves the reader with just the right amount of questions to keep them coming back. The ending is satisfying, yet not entirely conclusive. There had better be a sequel!! This is one of those books that will inspire people to stretch to the ends of their imagination and come up with their own mystical stories and ideas.
