Sweet and Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley

Updated: Jan 7, 2022

Tasmin, a teen with a curse that makes her incapable of love, lives a gloomy life as the village witch, banished from the witchlands. Wren, a magical girl who is hiding her powers so she can stay home and care for her ill father instead of going to the witchlands, knows there is something missing from her life. When dark magic sweeps across the land, Tasmin and Wren come together by chance, and set off together to hunt the dark witch.

OVERALL RATING 7.5/10

Sweet and Bitter Magic was quite enjoyable to read, but I feel like it could have been better. My first issue with it is that the emotions don't feel real. The characters change emotions so frequently that it feels almost like emotional whiplash! My other issue is that some plot points are just never explained, so it makes the story unbelievable. For example, the dark witch goes from a complete cartoon villain character to a loving sister in one scene, and it's never explained why her personality changed. The whole book just doesn't really feel real, but it is a cool story.

PROS
