Updated: Jan 7, 2022

In a world where magic has been outlawed and lost for hundreds of years, some secrets still lie hidden. The magical land of Ferenor is long abandoned, but there are pirates who traverse the skies with airships, searching for magic treasure and clues. When Bert, a regular school-boy, is suddenly swept up into the world of magic and pirates, he learns of a terrible conspiracy involving the royal family, and the land of Ferenor. It is up tp Bert and his new friends to stop the king.

OVERALL RATING 7/10

I thought that The Boy Who Went Magic was a fun and interesting read. The plot is good, the lands are well-described, and the journey is exciting. The characters are also very fun. My issue with it is that the characters seem to feel no negative emotions about some very upsetting things. The book can go from climbing around in the snow to walking between dead bodies, and the characters' emotions don't change. They also never feel bad about destroying an entire town. They only care about their ally's, and the death of their enemies is just another emotionless victory. The characters are all very one-sided, too.

PROS

Exciting

Good plot

Fun characters

CONS

Characters have very unrealistic emotions

All characters are one-sided

Quite violent/upsetting for most younger readers
