The Gumazing Gum Girl by Rhode Montijo

Gabby chews gum everywhere she goes, including as she sleeps. Everything is going well until an enormous gum-bubble pops all over her and Gabby accidentally becomes gum. This is scary at first, but soon she learns how to harness the super-human abilities that come with being made from chewing gum. This book is very funny and full of ridiculous gum puns.

OVERALL RATING 5/10

Although The Gumazing Gum Girl is funny, it lacks emotional depth. This is so common in kids books, and so irritating. Understandably, books for younger kids need to be simple, but that does not mean that they should be devoid of complex emotional situations. This book also seems at some points like it is trying to teach a lesson to the reader about listening to your parents, which made me want to stop reading. Ultimately, that is not the message of the book, but it seems like it is for a while, and that probably deters some readers. Altogether, it's not harmful or good, so it gets a five.

PROS

Funny

CONS

Not much emotion

Only the main character seems to have emotions

Unbelievable--not because of it's fantastical plot, but from of it's lack of explanation

Seems like it is telling kids that adults are always right at some points

NOTES

This is actually the first book in a series. I have not read the rest of the series, but I assume they are similar to this first book. I do not usually read an entire series before reviewing it because I would prefer to read other books that may receive different reviews. If I at some point do finish the trilogy, I will update the review.
