The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Updated: Jan 7, 2022

The Hate U Give is the story of a sixteen year old girl named Starr Carter and her experiences with police violence against black citizens in the US. The book deals with these issues and their repercussions very well, in my opinion. It also deals with other issues, such as Starr's insecurities about going to a fancy school in a richer neighborhood and having a white boyfriend. I learned a lot from reading this book.

OVERALL RATING 7.9/10

This is a good book, but in my opinion the way the characters speak, think, and interact is too similar to every other teen book I've ever read. I am always searching for new and different books, and this one is just a little to similar to the others. The plot and content is different and wonderful, but the characters were just too typical for me to fully enjoy the book.

PROS

Deals with racism well

Funny (at some parts)

Good plot

CONS

Stereotypical teen book
